April 27, 2004
On April 20th at UBC’s Chan Centre, an enraptured audience heard the opinions of some of the world's most eminent spiritual leaders. The peace symposium, which featured His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi, was the hottest ticket in town, but Collingwood student Alex Chan earned the opportunity, not just to attend, but also to participate in the proceedings.
The Grade 12 Collingwood School student won a place on the youth panel directing questions at the prestigious visitors by winning first prize in the Dalai Lama high school essay competition. The topic of Ms. Chan’s prize-winning essay was the importance of educating the heart, as well as the mind.
The 17-year-old was thrilled to participate in the historic event. “My whole family has long admired the Dalai Lama”, she explained, “so winning the competition and participating in the symposium was immensely rewarding."
