Jane Harbottle and Fundraising Event for 'Vision Sisters'
February 4, 2008
Jane Harbottle, Class of 2002, is working tirelessly to raise awareness about the women's group 'The Vision Sisters' that she volunteered for in Kibera, Kenya.
In the final year of her undergraduate degree at McGill, Ishe participated in a research based study abroad
program in East Africa. She remained to volunteer in Nairobi, Kenya and became involved with
The Vision Sisters, a women’s group in Kibera, Kenya. The Sisters are working
to establish a “women and youth in crisis centre" as a shelter for abused women
and children, a youth recreation centre and a voluntary counseling and testing
centre for the estimated 15% of people living in Kibera with HIV/AIDS. The funds raised from this event would directly
benefit this centre. In Jane's own words:
In light of the current political
situation in Kenya, I strongly believe that I have
a responsibility to raise awareness in my own privileged community and to raise
funds to assist these women in this time of need. I believe in the power of grass
roots initiatives- these women understand their community and what will help. I
believe that if we each give something, big or small, we could change their
lives forever.
Jane will be holding an
après work event to raise funds for The Vision
Sisters.
The event will be held
at Elixir and Opus Bar, Opus Hotel on
February 25th, 2008.
We wish Jane all the best with the event and hope that many in the Collingwood community will support her and the women in Kenya! For more information on The Vision Sisters, please visit 'Alumni Events'.
